“DEVICE FOR TRIDIMENSIONAL DETECTION OF ROAD DANGERS”

This invention is a multifunctional device which works mainly with a laser system, looking forward to becoming a great help in preventing accidents and contributing to road safety. The innovation consists in making street dangers (such as roundabouts, crossroads, worksites, etc.) visible at broad reach, up to 3 km distance.

Since the system is installed on the roundabouts and not on the vehicles we can state that it does not regard the vehicular aspect but the infrastructural one.

The working principle is simple and effective. It consists of an authentic hybrid lighting system, consisting of one or more laser light beams, managed by an electronic control unit. A small photovoltaic panel will be enough to power the device.

Its main feature is SAFETY in roundabouts. As a matter of fact roundabouts represent areas with a high car crash rate, especially in unfavorable weather conditions, above all in suburban areas, they are often hard to be spotted by the driver until just before arriving there at a fairly high speed, which often cause tragic consequences.

Till now the unique and well known system to make a roundabout, and in general every road traffic danger, or obstacles, visible consists of lighting the roundabout with typical streetlamps (with metallic iodide lamps, Led, etc.).

Such streetlamps present several disadvantages:

  • they require complex and expensive installations;
  • in order to supply an adequate lighting they have to be installed in a large number, thereby, they determine a high consumption of electricity;
  • they are expensive systems, poorly efficient and effective because can be easily confused with the streets lighting which converge towards the roundabout;
  • cause lighting pollution;
  • require high cost of installations and maintenance (bulbs replacement, transformers, etc.);
  • in particular weather conditions, light broken forth by street lamps, cause disorientation while driving.
  • last but not least, their environmental as well visual impact is very relevant.

Such invention is not meant to replace the current lighting systems, unless one verifies its feasibility in normative terms. However, it is meant to enforce them in order to guarantee a higher security in dangerous traffic areas.

One of the first targets of this invention is to supply a system which does not have the usual inconvenient features of the previous systems mentioned above, and that it is particularly efficient, reliable, cheap, which is environmentally-friendly and requires low maintenance.

Another target is to supply a system which has a structure easy to make.

According to this invention the targets mentioned above together with many others are achieved by a system which is able to detect and make roundabouts visible at broad reach (beyond three kilometers, wherever it is necessary).

Thick fog and rain point out the safe and convenient peculiarity of our device. The use of diffuse light can be counter-productive and even harmful, as after being reflected right through water, it creates an effect commonly known as "white wall" preventing drivers from visibility and disorientating them at the same time. By going deep through the fog,  our device makes dangers visible, even at broad reach, decreasing in this way the rate of accidents. The device becomes more and more efficient when weather conditions become unfavorable. Therefore, this invention becomes as efficient as weather conditions become more unfavorable.

The system is versatile, modular and scalable according to the operational needs, and it can include, but not limit to:

  • lower the cost of realization, maintenance and practice of roundabouts lights installations;
  • reduce the urban and extra urban light pollution by concentrating the light emission only where needed;
  • expand existing installations in order to ensure greater road safety;
  • alert drivers of imminent dangers;
  • display and point out the diameter of the roundabout;
  • project different types of information such as directions on exits to take, viability information, etc.;
  • send a call to the authorities in case of accident in the roundabout, provide location or, in case of failure of the device, send a signal to the control center;
  • it is also possible to integrate video surveillance services, control system, vehicular traffic analysis, remote management etc.

Police and road companies could benefit from mobile devices which detect and delimit accidents or work sites, with several colours.

The cost for a basic version starts from € 1,500 per device. This cost decreases up to 75% in case of industrial production. In addition to the expense mentioned above  we have to add the cost of the lamp-post and installation company.

MINIMUM MANAGEMENT & MAINTENANCE The only element which will be replaced is  the LASER diode after 5,000/10,000 working hours, once every 3 years. The installation takes few hours and a low number of technicians.

AN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS vision for companies which want to implement innovative ideas.

The whole system does not represent any sort of danger.
